I used to paint since childhood. My father, Shri Badrivishal Pitti, was an avid art collector, so I grew up with all forms of art around me. Mr. M.F. Hussain was a close friend and often stayed with us in Hyderabad. Watching him paint left a deep impression on me.
After marriage, I moved to Delhi and joined Triveni Kala Sangam. Later in 1983, when they opened a ceramic department, I enrolled because ceramics had always fascinated me. Although this shut down very soon, I had touched clay, and it was I who was moulded!
The immense potential and creativity within a lump of clay fills me with wonder and joy. Ceramics is the most thrilling art form where the artist is never in full control. The fire totally transforms my offering into a gift, leaving me awestruck and humbled.
When I work with clay, I am in harmony with the five elements – earth is mixed with water, space is filled with form, air dries it, and fire gives it strength.
I have always been awed by the incredible beauty of nature. It never ceases to inspire me, reflecting as it does, the many aspects of divinity, and fills me with ineffable calm, serenity, and wholeness. It is this essence of spirituality and creativity I strive to express through my work. I thank God for this passion.
I roll out thin slabs to create different sculptural forms. It is then fired in an electric kiln. The glaze is applied thereafter and again it is fired. The process is the same in wheel-thrown works where I alter and embellish it.
I work with a variety of clays like porcelain, ball clay, terracotta etc. I make my own clay and experiment extensively with glazes. I like to work with different techniques in form and firing.
